Position Title Certified Medical Assistant

Position Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), with direction of the physician or other designated licensed staff, provides patient care in an ambulatory setting with kindness and compassion; understanding the Mission of the University of the Incarnate Word and the School of Osteopathic Medicine.
The CMA is able to work as part of a team including physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and students in the health professions.

This position requires an individual who is self-motivated, and collaborative. They will perform clinical and administrative duties. Clinical duties include use of CureMD EMR, input vital signs, medical histories, prepare patients for examination/procedure, administer medications, and immunizations. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, maintaining EMR, scheduling and confirming appointments, filling out insurance forms/paperwork, and managing specimens for labs. The CMA performs duties within their scope of practice delegated by, and under the supervision of, a provider (TX). Reports to F- NP.

Description of Job Duties

• Coordinates patient care as directed by physicians, NP or PA and according to UIW and UIWSOM standards and policies.
• Respects patient HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality at all times and treats patients, and team with courtesy, kindness, compassion, and respect.
• Contacts parents with patient permission and administration of UIW as directed by provider.
• Practices standard infection control precautions.
• Maintains quality control standards.
• Performs all duties within the scope of a Medical Assistant’s standards of practice. Operates diagnostic equipment, preforms and interprets CLIA waived tests, remove staples from superficial wounds, changes wound dressing, obtains cultures, urine samples, administers non intravenous medication; performs simple specimen collection via noninvasive techniques and collects blood specimens via venipuncture or via capillary, records results, and does quality control checks on equipment.
• Sets up logs for lab, immunization refrigerator, immunizations, and return calls to patients on lab work after reviewed with physician or provider.
• Prepares and handles all specimens with communication to Quest Labs.
• Organizes exam and treatment rooms, stocks and cleans rooms and sterilizes instruments.
• Telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of information without requiring the exercise of judgment based on clinical knowledge.
• Rooms patients according to policy and procedures, prepares patient for examination.
• Records patient care documentation in the medical record (written or EMR) accurately and in a timely manner.
• Supports and follows criteria for reading TB tests in accordance with guidelines from CDC with over sight of provider.
• Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Good communication and customer service skills
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• High level use of EMR, scheduling, notes, and billing.
• Computer literacy and use of MS Office and Outlook email.
• Interest in working with students in a university environment.

Required Education

• High school graduate or GED equivalent.
• Some college.

Required Work Experience

• Three years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care.
• Experience using EMR.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least five years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in primary care with Women’s Health
• Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding
• Ability to verify insurance, schedule and room patients.
• National CMA registration.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

• Current, nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification with three to five years primary care experience.
• Current BLS certification or the ability to obtain the certification within 30 days of employment.

Work Hours

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Physical Demands

• This position requires Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctor’s diagnosis of disease.
• Lifting up to 25 pounds, bending, cleaning, sitting, standing, assisting others on and off exam tables.
